NOTES AND CORRESPONDENCE Comments on ‘‘Moist Convective Velocity and Buoyancy Scales’’

چکیده
Recently, both Rennó and Ingersoll (1996, hereafter RI) and Emanuel and Bister (1996, hereafter EB) derive theoretical formulas for the convective available potential energy (CAPE), the fractional area covered by active updrafts, and the vertical velocity in the active updrafts for atmospheres in radiative–convective equilibrium. The theories of RI and EB differ primarily in the means of closure for the mass flux of cumulus convection. Emanuel and Bister state that ‘‘the predictions of our theory differ considerably from those of Rennó and Ingersoll; for example, the buoyancy and velocity scales are independent of the magnitude of the radiative forcing.’’ The numerical experiments EB present support this notion that CAPE is relatively insensitive to the magnitude of the radiative forcing of the atmosphere. The quote above and the inference of EB’s paper is that the RI theory for CAPE will not satisfy these numerical experiments and therefore is invalid. In this comment, we present an alternative formula for CAPE using the same closure assumptions as RI. Furthermore, we will show that the predictions of CAPE by RI are not inconsistent with the numerical experiments presented in EB. Thus we will conclude it is inappropriate for EB to dismiss the theory of RI based upon the evidence presented by EB to date. Rennó and Ingersoll derive the following expression for the CAPE of an atmosphere in radiative–convective equilibrium:

NOTES AND CORRESPONDENCE Frictional Dissipation in a Precipitating Atmosphere
The frictional dissipation in the shear zone surrounding falling hydrometeors is estimated to be 2–4 W m22 in the Tropics. A numerical model of radiative–convective equilibrium with resolved three-dimensional moist convection confirms this estimate and shows that the precipitation-related dissipation is much larger than the dissipation associated with the turbulent energy cascade from the conve...
متن کاملNOTES AND CORRESPONDENCE The Dependence of Deep Cloud Mass Flux and Area Cover on Convective and Large-Scale Processes
A framework has been developed that brings together the important physical parameters and processes governing the vertical mass flux in deep convective clouds and their area cover. The main result is a simple relation for the cloud mass flux and area fraction in terms of the large-scale radiative cooling, environmental stratification, and the extent of lateral entrainment of the ambient air by ...
متن کاملNOTES AND CORRESPONDENCE Coupled Kelvin-Wave and Mirage-Wave Instabilities in Semigeostrophic Dynamics
A weak instability mode, associated with phase-locked counterpropagating coastal Kelvin waves in horizontal anticyclonic shear, is found in the semigeostrophic (SG) equations for stratified flow in a channel. This SG instability mode approximates a similar mode found in the Euler equations in the limit in which particle-trajectory slopes are much smaller than f /N, where f is the Coriolis frequ...
متن کاملNOTES AND CORRESPONDENCE Comments on “Impacts of CO2-Induced Warming on Simulated Hurricane Intensity and Precipitation: Sensitivity to the Choice of Climate Model and Convective Scheme”
In a simulation of enhanced tropical cyclones in a warmer world, Knutson and Tuleya make several assumptions that are not borne out in the real world. They include an unrealistically large carbon dioxide growth rate, an overly strong relationship between sea surface temperature and hurricane intensity, and the use of a mesoscale model that has shown little to no useful skill in predicting curre...
متن کاملNOTES AND CORRESPONDENCE Estimating Higher-Order Moments of Nonlinear Time Series
This study extends the authors’ earlier work that addresses the importance of bootstrap methods in computing statistical characteristics of meteorological and climatological datasets. Subsampling confidence intervals for the skewness and kurtosis are developed for nonlinear datasets, for which traditional time series techniques are not applicable. It also provides an example of how to apply sub...
